Finding good cast iron cookware for camping
When you've decided to go camping and discover the cost of some of the gear, choose alternate options for that gear. Antique shops, flea markets, thrift stores, friends and/or Yard sales. This video is a guide to prepare you to choose a piece, or pieces to fulfill your needs and avoid damaged poorly handled cast iron. Remember, a good set of cast iron cookware is also handy for grid down situations and emergencies. Good cast iron will last for generations, if its properly taken care of. Recommended links below.

The machete mounting is gonna cause you trouble
@@davidwrobel8089 I have considered that. Both me and the bike have been out of commission for a while. I just got an aftermarket hip installed. The Rokon needs a new centrifugal clutch. Thanks for your concern. I'm hoping to get back to my videos soon.
That agitation bit was gold! 😂
@@wolfsinclairgaming Thank you. I try to interject some humor occasionally. Have a great day.
Ho remember me I was at the gas station in the back u didn't see me but I commented and u responded I got more subs then u and im subed to u with notes on
Thank you. Thanks for your note. I'm getting closer to making new videos. I just went through hip replacement surgery and I'm in the healing process. Thank you so much for hanging in there and saying hi.
If you use a 10% Permethrin concentrate, you want to dilute it with 19 parts water and 1 part of 10% permethrin concentrate to produce a 0.5% Permethrin solution. For example, if you wanted to make a gallon (128 ounces) of a 0.5% Permethrin solution using water and a 10% Permethrin solution, you’d mix 6.4 ounces of 10% Permethrin solution with 121.6 ounces of water.
Hope your health is continuing to improve. Hope to see more videos soon
Thanks Jeff. I'm going in for hip surgery in June.
@@adventuresincampingwithcar8622 I wish you the best and hope you have a speedy recovery

Thanks. I'm hoping to get back on the bikes after my hip replacement.

Martins permethrin is great
Thanks for the suggestion. That's great to know.
Thank you i needed a review on this tent appreciate the review
You're welcome. Hopefully this year I'll get a new hip and can get back to my videos. Have a great day and even better camping.
Hell yeah brotha
Hope you are being successful in improving your health. Love your videos and looking forward to when you are able to post more of them.
Thanks Jeff. I've lost almost 30 lbs since the beginning of September. I'm feeling better. I've also been getting some help with expanding my camp site. I appreciate your thoughtfulness. Have a great day.
Thanks Carl
Thank you my friend. Have a great weekend.
Excellent information Carl. Looking forward in seeing your other cast iron videos.
Thank you. I still need to make the seasoning a coffee pot video. But since my wife and I were in the Mountains, near some terrific antiques shops. I skipped a bit forward starting the cast iron videos. Coming up will be care of old rusty cast iron and those steel Cold Handle skillets.
Tysm for these tips. Ive been transitioning to cast iron and knowing what to look for in thrift shops helps!!
You're welcome. Good luck finding some great buys. Thank you.
I want a cold handle skillet just don’t know where to find one
Most of the ones I've seen have been in antique shops. More in the smaller ones than the big ones. You can also check eBay.

Hey Carl👋
Hey Bobby, how yah doing?
@@adventuresincampingwithcar8622 good sir thanks
Do you test your small cast-iron for lead ? Because the small cast-iron they did use them lead for shot & bullets.
I don't have any small cast iron. I've never worried about it. I avoid anything that appears to be appropriate for that task.
Thanks for the tips. I'd be interested in seeing a video about cleaning and seasoning the cold handle skillets.
That's on the list. I have several Cold Handle skillets and love them. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching.
As always, great info Carl!!
Thank you my friend. You're welcome to share any of my videos. Have a great weekend.
Great info Carl, i use the lodge brand myself and they are heavy though. Thanks again.
Thank you Glen. Enjoy your cast iron. It's a lifetime love affair. 😂 I pray it lasts through the generations of your family.
We will keep an eye out for you for cowboy coffee pots at the Verona Antique Mall on Route 11. Thank you for visiting and great conversation.
I'll share that Information with my subscribers, thank you.
Great job on the video, the handle and the sheath Carl !
Thank you
It's not that old. It sure isn't vintage.
Ok, thanks. I'm not an expert on the timeline of these pots. I just know what to look for that could cause a problem. I just know the process of making the coffee. If you know of any resources to educate myself on them, I'm open to your input. Thanks
Unfortunately, I looked it up. To be considered vintage. It can be as new as 20 years old, and as old as 99 years old. Which I think is crazy. I would think that 20, should be a 50. But that's what I found.
I use one of the Blue, with white speckles, Baked Enamel ones every day. Mine has a no-flip Lid and a Bale for hanging. I bought it new as part of a complete Camp Cook set when I was 20. I'm 71 now and make Cowboy Coffee every morning in it.
Wow Mike, you're a testimony to how good and dependable this method is. Thank you so much.
great video Carl 😊
Thank you
Cool
Thank you
"Leave it as good or better than you found it" Great work❤
Definitely
I think you are diluting that far too much. All the commercial sprays have .5% permethrin along with a little petroleum distillate to dissolve it so it can form an emulsion in water. This all evaporates off to leave the water insoluble compound on the fabric. They recommend around 3-4 Oz of this .5% spray on an "outfit", or around 1 gram of permethrin per outfit. So if you were to use a 10% permethrin product like the one in the video, you need to mix it 20:1 with water to concentrate. That means for a gallon of spray, you need around 6 OZ of the concentrate. Based on that amount, you would be applying around a half a gram of permethrin to an "outfit" with 3 OZ of the spray. This sounds much more reasonable and is still slightly less than the commercial Sawyer spray. Hope this helps keep folks from getting ate up. I can tell you from experience, here in Missouri where I manage 100+ acres of dense forest, the higher concentration is WAY MORE EFFECTIVE. No more bites, period. And I actually get 4-5 washes of my cloths without losing the effect.
I'm just following the recommendations for a dog. I didn't want to make it too strong. It has been working for me at this dilution. But I appreciate your input. I'll rethink and evaluate it. Thank you.
I glad you have both Rokons running now.
They're not, unfortunately. You probably found some old videos. My newest video is about making Camp coffee, cowboy style. But thanks for noticing. Have a great day Harry.
@@adventuresincampingwithcar8622After I sent the message I noticed it was an old video. I have also watched the one on cowboy coffee. It was very well done and educational.
Thank you very much. I really appreciate the feedback. Sometimes I wonder.
Great video, keep them coming.
Thank you, and thanks for the encouragement. I have another idea that will match well with this one.
Great video. I have a coffee pot almost identical to yours. I’m going to make me some cowboy coffee. Thanks for the great video.
That's awesome. After this heat wave, that's just started, has passed. I'm going to start a short video on seasoning the coffee pot. I plan to use two pots. The old aluminum pot shown in the video, and the larger Stainless Steel pot I showed. I want to see how the seasoning compares in ability to adhere to the material. Thanks for watching and thanks for your encouragement. Happy Camping.
Outstanding episode Carl, I dig cowboy coffee ☕️ I do the same thing with my camp coffee pot, it stays “seasoned” 🤠👍🏼
That's awesome! My next episode will be seasoning a coffee pot. I'm going to do two. That old one I showed that was all clean, and the other one that's stainless steel. I want to compare how they do. That really big one is already seasoned.
Thank you for your comment and encouragement. Have a great day.
Great video!! i love camp coffee!!! 73 buddy!
Thank you my friend. Have a great day. 73
Great video Carl. Can't wait to see what you bring us next. #camplife
I want to do a comparison video on seasoning two pots. That old aluminum pot and the stainless steel pot. More people just getting into this have stainless steel, I suspect. I'm curious how it compares to the old aluminum. Thanks for the encouragement.
Great to see you back. I hope everything is going well for you.
I'm still working on my health. But I need to get out there and force myself to get something done. Thank you
Great video Carl, thanks to you I won’t be drinking grounds anymore
You're welcome brother.
welcome back, I don't drink coffee but it is nice to have when visitors stop by. 😊
Thank you Patrick. It takes a while to get these videos done with my hip the way it is. But I enjoy doing them. Thanks for the encouragement my friend.
I just recently found your channel and subscribed. I started watching the videos at the beginning. I had watched them all and just watched this one and was shocked I hope you are doing well, and I will be here waiting when you are able to make new videos. Take care of yourself and hope to see you back soon
Thank you my friend. It's been a struggle. But I'm working on it. In fact, I hope to have a new video up very soon. Have a great day.
Five minutes in is when he mixes it
Have used your videos in my Rangers classes - prayers for you and thank you for the videos!
You're welcome brother. Thank you for your prayers. Say Hi to the boys for me. You're welcome to share any of my videos. I got out today and worked on a new video. It was difficult. I pray it comes out well. It's more directed toward the Commanders and adults in a large group of just a couple camping together. I showed the right way to make Cowboy coffee. No egg shells, no salt or baking soda. I've heard some weird ones. But it comes out smooth without bitterness. God bless you. I'm planning on doing a cast iron camp cooking series. Starting with choosing the right cast iron for your needs.
When mounted on our Rokons the transmission is at an angle to vertical. Have wondered if fill olug assumes angle or straight up and down vertical?
I don't know. Sorry
Love the Marbles Parang solid and hard to lose.
I know people who's lives have been ruined by tick bites. When comparing the risks, chemicals or ticks, I choose chemicals.
Those are my thoughts my friend.
Good for you brother.
Thank you. We've gotten the camp site cleaned up and I'm planning some new videos. I'm hoping to do Dutch oven basics soon. I also want to do a cowboy coffee video. I'm considering using your coffee to demonstrate making it. I wasn't a real coffee fan, until I discovered the secret to making it properly.
Well a new video has been uploaded featuring Sasquatch coffee company Yeti Blend. If you would like to send me a sharable lnk I'll post it. perhaps for your sampler pack, or just your web site. Also any discount codes for those buying your coffee because of my video, I'm sure will be appriciated.
Some really nice machettes there Carl, that marbles handle looks really uncomfortble though? All the best - Jim
It does a good job. But you're right. The handle is like grabbing a 1x2 to work with. LOL
